Beer & Buns is a Japanese style Izakaya (like a gastropub) situated in Shoreditch hidden at the top of K10 on Appold street.
After visiting Japan last year, I was pleasantly surprised that it reminded me of some of the Izakaya’s that I visited with a cool and relaxed atmosphere. I loved the addition of the fussball tables and pinball machines!
As the name suggests, the focus is on Beers (mainly Japanese) and steamed buns. Throw in some chicken wings and sides and you have a fantstic menu suitable for food sharing (for those who read my blogs, you know this is one of my favourite things to do!)
The steamed Hirata buns were delicious – we had the Chicken Karage with Japanese Yuzu Koshu Slaw, Chashu Pork Belly with braised red cabbage and mustard and Aubergine Katsu with coriander salsa and miso sauce. My favourite was the chicken signature bun!
Accompanying the buns we just had to try the Tabasake Soy and Garlic and the Korean Hot chicken wings. The marinade on both was plentiful and so flavoursome (albeit messy!) and I particularly enjoyed the hot wings.
If that was not enough, we had sweet potato fries with spicey mayo and edamame beans with black beans sauce on the side – both fantastic portion sizes.
To finish it off, the lovely Frank convinced us to try a Sake Bomb (sake and beer) and it was so much fun – you bang your hands on the barrel to release the sake from the chopsticks holding it and it falls into the beer!! KAMPAI!
Definitely will be returning to Beer and Buns!
