AREPA RESTAURANT IN EAST LONDON
New Arepa venue!
This is the second restaurant in East London from Arepa, situated in Bethnal Green, Arepa is named after the classic Venezuelan food, which is grilled corn bread stuffed with different flavoursome fillings. Catering for whatever your appetite may be, you can opt for a traditional starter and main format, or simply select multiple small dishes to share in a tapas style.
The cocktail menu gives you classic combinations but with a Venezuelan twist. The signature Arepa Sour, Paradise G&T and Guarapita were refreshingly different and very (too…) drinkable.
We sampled a few of the small plates – Plantain Crisps and Tostines, which were twice cooked green plantain with a creamy and a delicious coconut and avocado purée. The Canas de Maiz and Youa (fried cassava chips in paprika salt) were my favourite tapas style dishes. Canas was a rich and creamy corn flour mixed with herbs, spices, goats cheese and steamed in a corn husk. The cassava chips were so light, fluffy and moreish!
From the main dishes we tried the Pollo Frito Arepa, crunchy fried chicken, corn puree with guava, chipotle and tamarind glaze. This was really flavoursome and a little spicy. The Pabellon, a traditional rice dish with shredded beef, plantain and cheese was not as spicy and was filling.
I was particularly impressed by how much of the menu was gluten free, as well as clearly labelling vegan and vegetarian options. Other allergies can also be taken into account if you suffer from any intolerances or allergies.
If you have a sweet tooth try the Tres Leches, a traditional Venezuelan dessert, soaked in three types of milk.
From the waiting staff that really knew their stuff, to the lively music, Arepa felt welcoming and vibrant. Whether you want brunch with a bit of a difference, a few cocktails or authentic Venezuelan food, I would definitely recommend checking out Arepa restaurant in East London.
