LUPINS

Restaurant in Borough Market

Lupins restaurant in Borough Market is set over 2 floors, serving traditional British tasting plates.  They have casual bar seating by the kitchen counter or a smaller, more intimate space upstairs.  We settled upstairs in a cosy corner of the dining room.  Sharing dishes are the concept here with a focus on seasonal British produce. Lupins offers a good wine list – we opted for half a carafe of the Quinto Arrio, Rioja, 2016 between us (£18).  A range of beers are also available.

The Dishes

We started with the Gordal olives (£5) to snack on with our wine and the mushroom & gorgonzola croquettes (£5).  The croquettes were deliciously cheesy, had a lovely crisp coating and the mushrooms packed a flavour punch – a great starter.

We had 4 sharing plates as recommended for main dishes.  We started with the Bream ceviche with smoked cods roe, pickled cucumber and fermented chilli.  It was a lovely light plate, beautifully presented (as are all the offerings here) with fresh flavours.   The ceviche fish was flaky and fresh and the cucumber brought a lovely sharpness to the whole dish.

Next up was the burrata with black figs, aged balsamic vinegar and lardo (£10) and the roast cauliflower with green tahini, sweet miso and crisp rice (£8).  Both were flavourful – the creamy burrata and fig combination was a winner and the cauli dish was earthy and really showcased cauliflower as a standalone ingredient well.  The Cornish crab thermidor (£10) was last but not least – a warming bowl of crab in a rich creamy sauce with crusty bread on the side.

We had the dark chocolate ganache with sesame and salted caramel (£6).  It was a rich end to  a great meal.  The ganache was creamy and deliciously, deeply steeped in the flavour of good dark chocolate.  The salted caramel was also properly salted and was delicious – a very pleasing end to the meal.
