Two One Four
Bar in Bermondsey
We visited Two One Four bar in Bermondsey to test out their awesome gin and tonic flights! The intimate bar is located in the basement of the popular Flour and Grape restaurant and offers seating at the bar, sofa’s and tables with high stools. It is also perfect for a tipple for guests that have to wait for a table at the restaurant.
The Gin Flights
Two One Four offers over 100 gins! As there are so many choose from, they helpfully offer tasters. There are three gin flights to choose from – The Great British Gin Off, Tour of London and Stars and Stripes. With each flight you are given three mini gins in an unknown order with a sealed revealing envelope! Try them and make a guess as to what’s what and then put yourself out of your misery. Also, the BTW tonic water has no added botanicals and is made with real quinine.
We opted for the Stars and Stripes gin flight. I will be honest upfront – all of the gins I guessed were completely wrong! It is actually a lot harder than it seems… My friend managed one out of three so pretty poor overall from us!
In no particular order (don’t want to spoil it for you) we tried Bluecoat American dry gin distilled in Philadelphia, Saint George Terrier gin from California and Few American Gin made using aged bourbon as a base. We sampled all of the gins straight and then mixed in with the BTW tonic water.
The gin flights cost £18 and can be shared between two! It is a really neat idea if you are a gin lover and want to try out different gins.
We obviously had to try some of the cocktails at Two One Four bar! We had an amazing Blackberry Bellini (£7.50) which was refreshing, light and fruity and obviously an Aperol Spritz (£7.50) to kick things off.
The menu is helpfully split into different sections – fruity, classic, sweet-and-sour, boozy and after dinner with a number of choices for each. We opted for the Passion with passionfruit infused Portobello Road gin, home-made Tonka syrup and lime which they describe as a porn star martini with more depth (£7.50). We also tried the Ginger Sour with lemongrass infused vodka, home-made ginger syrup, lemon (£7.50) which they describe as an aphrodisiac! No comment on that…
The cocktails were great and reasonably priced and the staff were lovely! 214 bar in Bermondsey is open until midnight on Thursday and 1.30am on Friday and Saturday’s. They also serve appetisers, small plates and desserts from Flour and Grape. The bar is great for date night, meet ups with friends or a drink before dinner!
