Bar 20 at Birleys is located in the city near Bank and Monument Station, opposite the entrance to Sky Garden.
A sophisticated but comfortable bar above the Birleys coffee shop, Breakfast is served from until 11am, Lunch from 12pm to 3pm and the Bar Menu is on offer from 4pm to 8pm. We visited during the evening to try out some cocktails and bar food. We were warmly greeted by Max who really took care of us throughout the whole evening and the other staff members were also attentive and friendly.
To start with we tried an Amaretto Sour: Amaretto di Saronno, fresh lemon, brown sugar, bitters & egg white and the Lady Jasmine: Ketel Citron, jasmine tea syrup, lychee & soda water. Both cocktails were beautiful to look at and tasted even better!
To accompany our drinks we pretty much ordered most of the menu! We had Crispy Baby Squid: served with sweet chilli sauce, Birley Sliders: two small bites of cheeseburgers served with hand cut chunky chips, the Italian Cured Meat board: A selection of Italian cured meats served with pickled artichokes and toasted bread, the British Isles Cheese Board: A selection of artisanal cheeses from the British Isles served with crackers, Italian Arancini: Home made with blue stilton & saffron mayo and some Mixed Italian Olives.
I’m not even sorry to say we polished off most of this! The squid was dipped in a fine batter and fried really well, the sweet chilli sauce packed a punch and complimented the squid perfectly. The sliders were delicious (and actually quite filling!) and the chunky chips were great! The meat and cheese boards were of a high standard, with a good selection of tasty cold meats and British cheese – I particularly liked the raisin chutney that accompanied the cheese board. The arancini were little morsels of cheesy goodness, with a chipotle-esque sauce to compliment – just fantastic.
The wonderful staff then mixed us up some bespoke cocktails based on our preferences and again, they both looked fantastic and hit the spot. With the elegant decor and low lighting it’s an attractive bar to spend the evening over cocktails and good food.
Whilst we were there we had the pleasure of live guitar music to compliment the ambience. We were informed that there are plans to add a terrace to the bar which would be a great touch to an already fantastic bar. We look forward to returning for cocktails on the terrace!
