Beers and Buns Izakaya Bar in Shoreditch

Beers and Buns – Restaurant / Pop-up in Shoreditch

Beer & Buns is a Japanese style Izakaya (like an informal gastropub) situated on the border of the City and Shoreditch hidden at the top of K10 on Appold Street.

After visiting Japan last year, I was pleasantly surprised that it reminded me of some of the Izakaya’s that I visited with a cool and relaxed atmosphere.

I loved the addition of the ping pong table, fussball table and pinball machines, which are all free of charge and fit in with the chilled out Shoreditch vibe.

So what’s the deal with the food?

As the name suggests, the focus is on steamed hirata buns which are also mixed up with japanese and korean style chicken wings and light bites.

The steamed hirata buns were delicious – we had the Chicken Karage with Japanese Yuzu Koshu Slaw, and Chashu Pork Belly with braised red cabbage. The Halloumi Katsu bun was delicious – fried halloumi with arugula salad tossed in lemon dressing and harrisa mayo. Accompanying the buns we just had to try the Tabasake Soy and Garlic and the Korean Hot chicken wings – the marinade on both was plentiful and so flavoursome (albeit messy!)

I loved the introduction of the bites menu which reminded me of being in Japan with Yakatori chicken with soy garlic glaze , deep fried chicken gyoza and salt and pepper squid. The squid was a little tough but the other two were delicious.

Definitely save some room for dessert as the Cinnamon coated fried bao was ridiculously good and the toffee chocolate brownie was so rich and smooth – the best bit is that they come served with miso butterscotch sauce, vanilla ice cream and peanut praline. Heaven!

Japanese beer and cocktails

First of all happy hour. 241 between 5-7 on glasses of prosecco, Ashai and selected cocktails – BARGAIN!

The majority of the cocktails all have a Japanese or Korean twist and are so reasonably priced with most of them only £6.50 (so happy hour is a REAL bargain).

After visiting Japan last year, I have become more accustomed to sake, both straight and in cocktails so I was a real fan of the Strawberry Sake Fizz – prosecco, strawberry nogori sake and strawberry puree. We also had the Barrel Aged Yuzu Negorini – gin, campari, sweet vermouth and yuzu – strong and served short. The Frozen Yuzu Margarita is a must have (if you read my other blogs you will know how much I love frozen cocktails) and the B&B with Korean spirit soju infused in cucumber and served with tonic water – really fresh and a twist on the classic g&t.

They also have a selection of Japanese craft beers  – obviously the staple beer of Japan – Asahi and then beers from different regions in Japan from Hitachino, Codeo Brewery and Nigata Brewery.

To finish it off,  we were convinced to try a Sake Bomb (sake and beer) and it was so much fun – you bang your hands on the barrel to release the sake from the chopsticks holding it and it falls into the beer!! KAMPAI! A real steal at only £3.80!
