Five floor Georgian townhouse in Farringdon

Bird of Smithfield Bar and Restaurant in Farringdon

Five storeys you say?!

Oh yes, Bird of Smithfield has plenty of space in its stunning Georgian townhouse in the heart of Farringdon, right near Smithfield market.

From the basement cocktail bar (the Birdcage), Bird of Smithfield extends to the lounge bar, first floor dining room, second floor private dining room and the rooftop bar. It is a smart and upmarket venue but with a welcoming and non pretentious feel – exactly how I like it.

Winter cocktails

The main bar is cosy with seating at the bar and a really impressive winter cocktail menu. We had the In the Meadows – Bols Genever (Dutch gin, which I didn’t realise!), Yellow Chartreuse, Maraschino
Kummel, Fennel, Lemon, Egg white, Cardamom and Bird dandelion bitters – and Memories of Last Summer Mount Gay Rum, Fig liqueur, Cherry compote, Pineapple juice, Lemon Sugar and Egg White. Beautifully presented and really tasty! There is a lovely winter, christmassy feel to the main bar at the minute too!

First floor dining room

The dining room is intimate with only 52 covers offering a British seasonal menu.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming and we started off with some fresh warm sourdough with unsalted butter and seaweed butter – delicious. We also tried the Rillette of Salmon, which was beautiful.

I wanted to devour the entire main menu – we ended up choosing the Breast of Guinea Fowl, crushed root vegetables, agen orune, sprouts, roasting juices with creamed potatoes and Roasted Sirloin of Beef, mushroom persillade, spinach, straw potato, red wine.  Both dishes were rich, wholesome and tasty – the beef was perfectly cooked medium rare and the red wine was delicious.

We finished off sharing a Chocolate Brownie Sundae with homemade marshmallows, pistachio and vanilla cream. I actually expected the dessert to come in an old school sundae glass but I was wrong! I prefer my brownies to be hot and gooey so this unfortunately did not stand out to me as a dessert.

The Rooftop

As you probably know, I love a rooftop! The one at Bird of Smithfield was an Aperol Spritz terrace in the summer and has now turned into a cosy winter terrace with Christmas trees!
