Comptoir V is the new all vegan sister restaurant of Comptoir Mezze in Kensal Rise. Located just behind Kensal Rise station they serve up Moroccan food and drinks, some with a Caribbean twist due to the head chef hailing from Trinidad and Tobago.
It’s an absolutely gorgeous little restaurant, small and cosy with a tasteful Moroccan theme running throughout. When we first arrived around six it was quiet but there were soon more diners joining us. The music was really good, nicely chilled and added to the ambience of the place. The staff were friendly and helpful and really made us feel at home.
Comptoir V’s menu hosts a variety of healthy vegan options which range from mezze type dishes to curries and salads. We opted to start with the Moroccan Sharer which included sautéed spinach, Moroccan carrot smash, spicy beetroot hummus, caramelised onion & chickpeas and aubergine zaalouk. It came presented in lovely little Moroccan bowls and with some toasted flatbread. All of the dishes were really tasty and full of flavour. I thought that the carrot smash would be a bit dull but it was actually my favourite – with a coconut sugar topping it had a unique flavour. The hummus was smooth and flavoursome and the aubergine was also really delicious.
For our mains we tried the Moroccan Buddha Bowl with wholewheat couscous, aubergine zaalouk, sautéed spinach, curried chickpeas & avocado & caramelised onions. I realised that when this came it pretty much had most of the starters we’d had but it’s credit to the chef that it was still incredible. The couscous was soft and full of flavour and all of the toppings were so tasty and moreish. We also had the Spiced Island Curry, a hearty warming sweet potato and lentil curry served on a bed of festive rice. It was full of spices which combined perfectly – the rice alone was really tasty, with a unique flavour to it. It was a really big portion too perfect for a cold January night.
To finish we shared the Banana and Date Crumble: bananas, dates & pecan nuts encased in a light crumble, with a house banana caramel custard. This was an absolute show stopper, the dates were soft and warm underneath and coated with tasty toasted crumble and the custard was so creamy and delicious.
We opted to try a Kalefornication fresh juice with apple, kale, cucumber, broccoli and lime which was really fresh and made us feel instantly healthy whilst still managing to taste good! We also had the Hug in a Mug with cocoa, cinnamon, maca & almond butter and almond milk. It was really warming and delicious – the almond butter added a great nutty taste.
A really great little place that I’d recommend to vegans and meat eaters alike. With healthy and hearty processed free food that tastes good too it’s a recipe for success. I’ll be back for sure – their burgers looked too good not to!
