SMAKA (smah’ka meaning taste in Swedish) is a lovely Scandinavian cafe / restaurant in between Aldgate East and Whitechapel.

The dinner menu was launched at the beginning of November and offers fresh, original meals in open and light surroundings. The staff are lovely and helpful, which made the evening even better.

Pictured below are the horseradish cheesecake with lingonberry vinagrette (original!), pickled mackerel and beetroot salad,  ginger cured salmon with herb sauce and the raraka (potato pancake). I particularly enjoyed the raraka.

Moving on to the mains, I highly recommend the lamb shank with risotto – the lamb fell off the bone and the portions were really decent. Pictured with the lamb is the duck breast with root vegetables with cardamon and coffee sauce.

To finish off the meal, I had the Swedish waffle with homemade strawberry jam and cream!
