Cottons is a Caribbean restaurant and rum shack which now has a permanent residency in Shoreditch on Curtain Road (previously at Boxpark). They also have a branch in Camden and are soon opening one in Vauxhall.
The restaurant has a cool decor with muriels on the walls and a colourful bar with over a hundred choices of rum! The staff were really friendly and happy to help us choose what to order.
The menu has a good mixture of vegetarian, fish and meat options. We opted for the selection of fritters to begin (chick pea, black eyed bean and callaloo and spinach) with coconut chutney and the lobster and crayfish Mac and cheese, which was beautifully presented. The fritters were a little dry (although the chutney helped) but the mac and cheese was good.
There was so much on the main menu that I wanted to try so, to get a variety, we choose the mixed meat platter which had lamb chop, chicken pieces, chicken wing, jerk pork rib served with rice and peas and plantain. At £27.50 for two people, for what you got it was really good value! The meat was tasty which lovely seasoning. We were slightly defeated so I ended up eating the rest for lunch the next day.
I was impressed with the selection of cocktails (mostly rum based of course) – we had a lovely pina colada, a watermelon cooler which was really refreshing, a dark n stormy (which my friend said was one of he best she had ever had!) and a cottons passion (loved the chilli!). Great opportunity to try a selection of cocktails during happy hour 4-7pm!
