Poke and Matcha Me at Tombo

Tombo in Fitzrovia is a poké & matcha bar joining a chain of Tombo’s across Soho and Kensington. This branch is the third to open in London and it serves up very tasty poké, donburi and some delicious sweet treats too. It’s located just around the corner from Goodge Street Station on Windmill Street.

The Mood
The first thing that struck me when I entered was just how beautiful this place is! The decor is modern and fresh with a Japanese twist. There’s a beautiful decorated tree in the centre of the restaurant and a lovely little shrine above one of the tables. It has a clean modern feel and there is seating for approximately 40. The staff at Tombo were friendly and helpful too.

The Food
As a poké bar they serve up delicious variations of poké bowls but also donburi bowls too. I decided to try the Tofu Poké Bowl with extra avocado and crispy shallots and the sesame soy dressing. It was delicious! I love a poké bowl and this ranks high amongst the ones I’ve tried, the rice was cooked perfectly, the tofu was flavoursome and plentiful and the dressing was so tasty – it looked beautiful too. My friend had the Teriyaki Chicken Don: baked chicken thigh in teriyaki sauce, mizuna salad and sesame seeds on a bed of rice. This was really something special, the rice was fluffy and tasty and the chicken had a great sticky teriyaki sauce – there was loads of it too. He opted to add an egg which was perfectly poached too.

We also had some sides of the Edamame and Prawn Dumplings which were both really tasty.

As soon as we walked in we spotted the delicious looking deserts so obviously we had to try some! We had the Vegan Matcha Cheesecake and the Matcha Gateau Chocolat…wow! They were amazing! The vegan cheesecake was the best I’ve ever had, made with silken tofu it was soft and delicate and had a wonderful matcha and citrus flavouring. The gateau lasted my friend about 2 seconds, it was the perfect balance of chocolate and matcha.

The Drinks
Matcha is in the name so we had to have some tasty teas! We tried the Sakura (Cherry Blossom Kukicha) which had a lovely delicate flavour, and the Jasmine  which again was delicate and floral. You can also have many variations of matcha with coffee or milk shakes – the list is endless!
In Summary
A lovely looking restaurant with friendly staff and delicious food and drinks. It’s very reasonable in price and I’ll be going back for sure!
