Bars in Cambridge
Cambridge is certainly not short of pubs and bars! Here are a selection of bars in Cambridge I visited during my trip:
Novi Cocktail Bar
Novi is situated on Regent Street and is all about the day, evening and the night given it is open from 9am until 3am every day! It offers breakfast, coffee (big on espresso’s) and brunch during the day in a relaxed people watching environment. It then comes alive in the evening for cocktails and smaller plates.
We visited on a Saturday night when it was buzzing with people having drinks and dinner. The cocktails were reasonably priced and we opted for a mixture from the different section: Aperitif, Fruit and Spice.
The Mi-To: Martini Rosso, Ambrato, Campari bitter was fresh and light. We loved the the Russian Spring Punch: organic vodka, creme de cassis, fresh lemon juice, gomme syrup and prosecco. The ingredients worked well together and it was not too sweet.
We also tried the Scarlett’s Kiss: organic vodka, pierre ferrand dry curacao, fresh lemon juice, chilli, angostura bitter, vanilla sugar. This is for you if you love a kick (I liked it the more I tried it!). Lastly, we had the Angel Face: Juniper green organic gin, dupon calvados vsop, apricot brandy which was strong!
The Eagle
Better known for the pub where DNA was founded!
The Eagle is a traditional pub (owned by Greene King) dating back to the 16th century serving a selection of beers and ales (including DNA IPA) and breakfast lunch and dinner.
In 1953 Francis Crick and James Watson were working at the University’s laboratory opposite the Eagle and ran into the pub announcing that they had discovered the ‘secret of life’. I had not actually appreciated how recent DNA was founded until I visited this pub.
Nice cosy pub to delve into between sightseeing or shopping and a great beer garden in the summer.
The Anchor Cambridge
Perfectly situated alongside the River Cam, the Anchor is a lovely pub to people watch outside (you will always come across someone struggling with a punt!) with lovely drinking and dining rooms inside.
We visited for some drinks and to watch the Rugby but would love to return to sample some fo the traditional British dishes on the mezzanine dining room. Also, if you love your ale, The Anchor has six different ones made by local brewers.
Make sure you check out the Mathematical Bridge right by The Anchor – although it appears like an arch, it is actually composed of straight timbers built in an unusual design.
King’s College is just round the corner so The Anchor is a great pub to visit before / after some college sightseeing.
The Mitre
Close to Trinity College is The Mitre, a traditional British Pub dating back to 1752. It is famous for once being two pubs separated by a yard named after a medieval priest. Similarly to other pubs in the area, The Mitre stocks local ale and offers a range of British dishes.
Ta Bouche
Based in Market Passage, Ta Bouche is a cafe during the day and bar at night. Playing background music, it is a decent bar to start off your night, particularly when the happy hour deals are so good! 2 for £10 on selected cocktails between 5-10pm Monday to Thursday, 6-10pm Friday and Saturday and all night Sunday. The cocktails are split up in the menu ranging from twisted classics to low calorie options and let’s hit the disco classics.
