Restaurant in Haggerston
Berber & Q is a grill house restaurant in Haggerston housed in a converted railway arch near the station. With exposed brickwork and pipes, it has a warehouse vibe complimented by spots of colour with red lampshades around the bar. It felt pretty ‘trendy’ (whatever that means in the East London world!).
Their food takes inspiration from the ingredients and flavours of the Middle East, North Africa and across the Ottoman. They cook over live fire because, as they say, it makes food taste better.
The menu is split into the following sections: Mezze, Meats, Vegetables, Sides and Extras. We had the following dishes which were plenty (they gave me a takeaway box which I was grateful for!):
- Mezze: Berber & Q Hummus, Burnt Butter, Pine Nuts served with pita (£6.50)
- Meats: Hot Smoked Merguez Sausage, house honey mustard (£12) and Low and Slow Lamb Mechoui, Harissa (£18.50). These were served with pickles, sauce, herb salad & pita
- Vegetables: Berber & Q Cauliflower Shawarma (£6.50)
- Sides: Smoked Pit Beans, crispy shallots (£5)
Well, they certainly nailed the bold flavours. Each bite, I wanted more (it even tasted great the next day). The smoky spicy sausages were the winning dish closely followed by the cauliflower. The lamb was tender with the harissa allowing for some spice to shine through. Simply fantastic dishes.
If you are based near Islington, they also have a Berber & Q Shawarma Bar open on Exmouth Market.
