Curveball is a lovely little restaurant and bar that has recently opened in Balham focusing on global tasting plates. Located around the corner from Balham station, the restaurant is quirky and rustic at the same time. When we arrived the restaurant was already busy and there was a steady stream of customers coming and going all evening.

True to their name Curveball serves up…balls and lots of them! We started with the Dolly’s Double Cheese, a fourth of July special which is a mac and cheese ball filled with ham. It was chunky gooey and very tasty. We then tried the Doodles: spicy prawn ball salad bowl with rice noodles, noodled veg and crushed roasted peanuts in a nuoc cham dressing. This packed a punch! It was really flavoursome and spicy without being too overpowering.

We also had the Green Giant: edamame, peas, avocado and chargrilled broccoli in a peanut bang bang dressing. This was really tasty, it was fresh and healthy and the dressing was really good. Finally we had the Tony Soprano: Cumbrian beef and free range pork balls in classic short-rib ragu, baked with rigatoni and finished with a house blend of cheeses. This was a really tasty dish, packed full of meaty flavour and with a good portion of the meatballs.

The cocktails were on offer whilst we were there, £5 during happy hour (Tuesday to Friday 6pm-8pm) which is a bargain! The staff were friendly and helpful and the food came really quickly and was eaten pretty quickly too! With the smaller dishes costing £6 for one, £17 for three or £27 for five and the mains costing upwards from £9.50  Curveball is good value.
