Hide Bar in Bermondsey
Away from the hustle and bustle of London Bridge and Borough Market is Bermondsey Street, lined with restaurants and bars. We were immediately attracted to Hide Bar which had its windows open on a summer evening and felt warm and welcoming.
The bar itself is pretty large with high tables and stools near the bar area and further seating towards the back. There was a buzzing atmosphere with good music that was not too loud!
The majority of the drinks and ingredients are brewed, distilled, fermented or compounded in London! They have 18 draught lines, 12 of which pour an ever-changing selection of London beers, 6 of which pour cocktails made with London-distilled spirits. I do love it when there is a strong focus on London sourced ingredients.
Obviously we chose to sample some of the cocktails. We had the:
- Lime Leaf Cosmo: Sipsmith vodka, Beefeater gin, lime leaf, cranberry, citrus, triple sec, fizz
- Clover Club: Portobello no.171 gin, raspberry, sugar, lemon & egg white
- East End Julep: East London LC Demerara rum, apple shrub, mint & bitters
- Monday Collins (mocktail): Mint, lime, cucumber syrup & soda
We were particularly impressed with the Clover Club which was beautifully presented and was not too sweet. The East End Julep sure packed a punch and we loved the Demerara rum. All cocktails are priced around £9-10 and there is a great selection.
Hide Bar in Bermondsey offers a number of small plates and sharing platters. Just what you need to soak up the alcohol without getting too full! We had already eaten so did not delve into the menu as much as we would have liked.
However, we could not resist trying the Black pepper mac & cheese balls (£5) and Hummus, feta, Kalamata black olives, flatbread (£7). The mac and cheese was crunchy and I loved the sauce that accompanied it. We would have preferred it a little more cheesy / runny but that is personal preference. The hummus and flatbread was so delicious and we loved the addition of feta. Similarly to the drinks, the food is sourced from the local area which is always to be encouraged.
We had a great evening at Hide Bar in Bermondsey. The staff were friendly, the cocktails were taste and we loved the music. Open until 1am in the week and 2am at the weekends, it is definitely worth checking out.
