Hotbox is on Commercial Street between Liverpool Street and Aldgate and like many of the best smokehouses, it started off as a street food vendor which became far too popular!
I visited for a great collaboration between Hotbox and American bourbon company, Wild Turkey, who were offering a limited edition pairing menu. At only £25 for 2 courses and 2 pairing cocktails or £30 for 3 courses / 3 cocktails, it is exceptional value.
The menu is aimed to take customers through the life of the Real Kentucky (the home of Wild Turkey) cocktails with fantastic barbecue dishes from Hotbox.
To start, we had the Slow smoked brisket slider buns with sweet and tangy Wild Turet barbecue sauce with a Ten Cent Pistol cocktail: Wild Turkey rye, banana, honey, lemon and tea smoke – definitely well matched and the brisket was absolutely fantastic!
On to the mains we had 18-hour smoked pulled pork in barbecue dripping sauce with a side of the Kentucky favourite – the corn bread salad (salad of jalapeno sour cream, spicy black beans, smoked cheddar and grilled corn) and a smoked and spirtzed mutton shank. The pork was paired with the White Heat – a sugar and spice twist on the Wild Turkey 101 Old Fashioned mixed with white chocolate and pepper and the shank with Ball and Boil: wild turkey rye, apricot, lemon, sugar, bitters and fruited IPA.
Gorgeous food, relaxed atmosphere and good service. Must return for a bottomless brunch for £25pp where you can choose from unlimited Prosecco, Mimosa or Bloody Mary with a brunch dish priced at between £7 and £12.
