PAUL the popular bakery chain
Yes, the bakery chain PAUL also has two French restaurants – one in Covent Garden and the other on Old Broad Street beneath Tower 42.
Featuring a large bar and dining area decorated with vibrant red and blue colours, PAUL is open Monday to Friday for breakfast (you must have one of their hot chocolates!) lunch, afternoon tea, drinks and dinner.
Happy Hour Cocktails
Le Restaurant de PAUL Tower 42 offers happy hour from 4-7pm where all cocktails are just a fiver – bargain! It goes without saying that we just had to sample some of these… We chose the Martini Fraise and Basilic – basil strawberries pepper strawberry liquor vodka Mure Beau – blackberries, lemon juice, Ratafia, Evangelista, cranberry juice, cognac and French 75 – raspberry, lemon juice, Ratafia, gin, cremant de bourgogne. They all went down a little too easily!
If you don’t fancy cocktails, PAUL offers a range of regional French red, white and rosé wines along with a selection of premium Champagnes.
I couldn’t take my eyes off the Charcuterie board with Saucisson sec, Bayonne ham, coppa, rosette, smoked duck, pork pâté & cornichons and served with some delicious bread (of course that is what PAUL is best known for!) Definitely recommend this starter!
The main menu is split meat, fish and vegetarian which is always easy for navigating through – they had some gorgeous sounding dishes on the menu including rib eye steak and seabass. However, I was instantly drawn to the Hachis parmentier d’agneau: Lamb shepherd’s pie with a garlic & parsley breadcrumb. Not a dish I would normally choose but I was very impressed – delicious flavours and it melted in your mouth – served with wilted spinach I did not regret my choice. My friend had the Ravioli de Royan: Mini ravioli from Royan filled with ricotta and spinach, in a Emmental, shallot & white wine sauce – this was served more like a baked dish which I did not expect but it was tasty.
PAUL is perfectly positioned for city workers to have a relaxing meal or drinks – the happy hour is fantastic for the quality of the cocktails and I recommend the lamb shepherds pie!
