Restaurants in Reykjavik
Matarkjallarinn (or the Food Cellar in English) is fine dining at its best in the heart of Reykjavik. In hindsight I wish I had worn something nicer than a jumper (then again it was -5 outside!).
Situated in a 160 year old building, Matarkjallarinn has a stunning interior both in the restaurant and bar area. Using the finest Icelandic ingredients, Matarkjallarinn offers a brassiere type dining together with a fantastic service.
The Trivento Malbec Reserva (Argentina) and the Gerard Bertrand Cotes De Roses (France) wine carafes were both fantastic.
Discover Island Menu
We then opted for the Discover Iceland Menu four course menu (five including the delicious pretzel) which is the best way to try some of the fantastic Icelandic classics. We started off with the Grilled Puffin and Leg of Goose with blueberries, button mushrooms which was absolutely stunning and flavoursome. This was followed by the Cured Salmon, cream cheese, pear, moss which was so beautifully presented.
The Grilled Lamb Tenderloin, slow cooked lamb shank, carrot, baked onion was melt in your mouth good. We were so full by this point but managed to squeeze in the Rhubarb Skyr with white chocolate which, just like the rest, delicious.
We finished off with some coffee (very popular in Iceland) which was served in a flask!
This Discover Iceland Menu was 9,700 per person (around £65) but given how fantastic the food is, it is worth it. The presentation of the dishes was gorgeous and the staff explained each one. For all the vegans and vegetarians out there, they have a separate menu which also looked delicious! Matarkjallarinn is definitely worth a visit when in Reykjavik!
