Rooftop restaurant in Southwark

Seabird is a rooftop restaurant in Southwark atop the Hoxton Hotel. It boasts impressive views across London as well as the UK’s longest oyster list. Opening later than planned, due to getting things perfect, we were more than keen to go and try it out.

Entering the Hoxton, things can be a little overwhelming when it comes to direction. Head straight in front of you, to the last lift on the left and you’ll see the sign for Seabird – or ask someone, which is what we did. Sat on the 14th floor, it’s a seaside haven from the moment you step out of the lift. The interior is stunning – with pale whites, blues and beiges running throughout, plenty of greenery, and marble table tops with scale-like finish. Even the finest details all aligned to the theme, from the shoes the team wore, to earrings, and cocktail glasses. It gave it a sophisticated, classy feel.

The service from the start was attentive, helpful and friendly. Valentine looked after us throughout our service and she was fantastic ensuring she gave her recommendations and checked on us regularly. We were seated at a table by the window so we could admire the views on this rooftop restaurant, which were incredible!

The Food

The food at Seabird has Portuguese and Spanish influences, which run throughout all menus. We visited for Weekend Brunch with the menu featuring an array of seafood platters, small plates, charcuterie, larger plates and sides.

Knowing that Seabird offers the longest Oyster menu in the UK, we couldn’t skip these. The menu itself is pretty extensive with so many options. Our recommendation is have your host pick for you! We had both the Gillardeau from France (£4 each) and Aquanostra from Portugal (£3.50 each), and they were fantastic. Big and meaty, beautiful in flavour with the salted water too, and complimented by the mignonette on the side.

For the mains, you can either go with a larger plate option, or mix and match a few small plates with charcuterie too – although you’re more than welcome to have charcuterie as the starter also. We went for the small plate option, to try more – although some of the plates weren’t that small!

The Morcilla on toast with fried duck egg and piparras (£12) was a favourite. The morcilla (Spanish blood sausage) was really rich and absolutely delightful – a lot like nduja. The piparras (sweet green chillis) complimented the meat well, adding a touch of heat. The yolk beautifully runny, adding to the presentation but also the taste. One dreamy dish we highly recommend having as part of your brunch feast.

More Food!

The Crab & manchego omelette with hollandaise and smoked paprika (£14) was super soft and creamy, with the manchego shining through. You couldn’t taste the crab too much, but it did not disappoint. It comes with toast too, so it’s plenty filling. Hands down one of the best omelettes we have had.

The Grilled sardine skewers with gordal olive salsa (£12.50) were cooked beautifully. The fish easily pulled away from the bones and was very tasty indeed. The gordal olive salsa adding a potent fresh and herby finish. A lighter option than the other two, but definitely one to be tried!

The Señorío de Montanera Jamón Ibérico de Bellota DOP (£14) was the most premium jamon on the menu and we could taste why. It was of great quality and taste. As mentioned, this can be ordered as a starter or with a selection of dishes as a main, and we think it works great with both.

Side Dishes

The Weekend Brunch menu has some great sides to accompany the brunch dishes too.The Papas arrugadas with mojo rojo (£5) arrived la dente, dusty and wrinkly (potatoes). The mojo rojo was a smoky, thick chilli based sauce, which was seriously good alongside other dishes. The warm fava beans (£6) added some extra green to the table. With grated egg and herbed breadcrumbs, it’s got plenty of texture, and a mild yet tasty flavour which made it go well with so many of the other dishes.

We didn’t really have space for dessert, even though the menu did catch our eye. There are just three desserts (manchego cheesecake, bola de berlim and lemon granita) and they all sounded great! Valentine highly recommend we try the Manchego cheesecake (£7) so we just had to share one. The cheesecake arrives as quite a large slice, with no biscuit base, just the cheesy part. The best bit is that once it’s at your table, one of the team grates fresh manchego over the top! It was so creamy yet fluffy. It was mildly cheesy, and absolutely dreamy. It’s a big slice, so if you’ve filled up on savoury, do share one!

Rooftop Cocktails

Seabird has quite an extensive drinks list. The cocktail menu focuses on exotic fun flavours, and wines come from Europe’s best small-scale producers. There are a handful of cocktails on the brunch menu, selected to accompany the dishes – many of which are tomato based (think bloody mary, but more classy).

The Bellini (£12) arrived in a beautiful small glass which reminded us of shells. Made up of cava, white peach, Crème de Pêche, it was delicious. The Bloody Snapper (£14) on the other hand was served in a large glass. Consisting of Thomas Dakin Red Cole Gin, horseradish, fennel, it was lighter than other tomato juice based cocktails we have had. It was spicier with the horseradish too, but not too overpowering as to take the focus away from the dishes.

We also tried the Jungle Bird (£13) from the main menu, which was a delightful frozen cocktail with Havana Club 7yr, Chairman’s Reserve St Lucian Rum, Pina and Campari. It was strong and delicious, even with a touch of brain freeze – yes we tried to drink it too quickly! A twist on the classic Clover Club (£14), with raspberry, gin, vermouth, lemon, is featured on the dessert menu rather than the main drinks menu. It was slightly juicy, with a touch of citrus, and was a great way to finish our feast.

Overall

We had such a fantastic time at Seabird, which is such an amazing rooftop restaurant in Southwark. We were impressed by the whole experience from the stunning views, to the food, cocktails and first class service. The oysters were fab, as were all the dishes we tried as part of our brunch feast. We highly recommend a weekend trip for brunch or cocktails if you’re just looking for a new drink spot to try!
