Located just down Hackney Road (Shoreditch / Hoxton way) lies The Looking Glass Cocktail Club.
I visited on a Friday evening when the bar was launching its new cocktail menu and was greeted by a bouncer on the door asking if I had a reservation. This must be a swish place I thought.
Swish, yes – pretentious, no. What a lovely venue – as you go in there is a smallish sized bar area but through the “secret door” (who doesn’t love a secret door?!) there is a much larger space with tables and sofas. Definitely a speakeasy feel but more space then other competitors, not as dark (so you can actually see things), friendly staff and more of a fun feel to the bar.
Popcorn accompanies the cocktails and they were also serving platters of bread, meat and cheese which was a lovely touch.
The cocktail menu is inventive – I particularly liked the “Louise” part of You be Thelma, I’ll be Louise which was amaro montenegro, blackberry shrub, lemon, King’s Ginger liquerand mint and the Gold Bullion – aperol, amaro averna, lemon, champagne and rhubarb reduction.
DJs play later in the evening – perfect for catch up with friends and definitely for a date night.
