Located around London’s bustling theatre district, Tredwells is a relaxed fine dining restaurant in Covent Garden. Headed up by none other than THE Marcus Wareing and talented chef Patron Chantelle Nicholson, Tredwells serves high quality British cooking.  They have partnered especially with the “Red” play at nearby Wyndham’s Theatre, based on the artist Mark Rothko and created a 3 course menu to pair with it £69 including a ticket to “Red”)

Tredwells have created a special Rothko inspired cocktail to start the special Red play menu.  Called The Seagram it is named after a series of Rothko paintings that form the subject of Rothko’s angst in the play.  On the drink’s arrival there was no mistaking it’s reference! It was splattered with red flecks across the top and metallic sheen and hit its brief without being gimmicky.  Made of bathtub gin, ginger syrup, lemon juice, pineapple juice and bitters it was a refreshing cocktail that was not too strong.

We started with an excellent little loaf of potato and rosemary bread served with a delicious salted whey butter.  Incredibly moreish crust with a soft and pillow-y middle meant we started the meal anticipating very good things!
We chose the salt and pepper cod cheeks, runner beans, XO aioli which were in a crisp batter and tender inside.  We also opted for the chargilled prawns, labneh, mint and cumin (£4 supplement).  The prawns were juicy and the warmth of the cumin mingled perfectly with the cool  mint. It was a great mix of flavours and beautifully presented.

We tried the chargrilled mackerel, tomato, basil and homemade Ivy House Farm ricotta  which flaked beautifully off the fork.  It was surprisingly filling and the flavour from the sauce with the fresh, seasonal tomatoes and basil made for a great summery main.

We had the grilled broccoli, toasted almond butter, capers (£5) with our main which was a great veg side.  Chef Chantelle offers a vegetarian tasting menu (called Vegwells) and her creativity with vegetables was evident from this dish.  The sauce with the broccoli was creamy and nutty and the capers were a lovely pop of flavour.

The caramel soft serve with honeycomb was a real favourite. It was a  creamy, caramel decadence served in a classic swirl with fantastically crunchy and chewy honeycomb pieces.  The choux, peanut and raspberry was a pastry doughnut with a churro like texture as opposed to the lighter eclair type of pastry. It was served with a tangy raspberry sauce with real sharpness perfectly offset by a quenelle of  indulgent peanut-y cream.  Sprinkles of peanut added lovely texture and bite and we would recommend either of these for a seriously satisfying end to your meal.

The play had excellent and powerful performances delivered by award winning actor Alfred Molina as Rothko and Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away With Murder) as his assistant.  The 2 man play kept us engaged with a stunning set depicting Rothko’s art.  Having won six Tony awards, this play is a riveting and thought provoking 90 minutes.

Tredwells restaurant in Covent Garden is a great space for dining. With 3 floors you can choose from leather booth style seating by the bar or an open light filled dining room.  The incredibly friendl  but never overbearing service set the tone of our visit.  The food and flavours are clearly put together with passion and the restaurant has lovely touches throughout.  That is Tredwells – fine dining with warmth.
