Brunch in Fitzrovia
With a Michelin star chef at the helm and award winning interiors, Berners Tavern is a great place for brunch in Fitzrovia. It is such a lovely contemporary British restaurant, making use of the best of British produce and serving up simple yet elegant dishes for any time of day.
We were wowed as we stepped into Berners. It was stunning with high ceilings, stunning chandeliers, regal maroon and gold interiors and gilded frames flocking the walls. The justification for their design accolades are immediately obvious and our welcome was warm and inviting. This space certainly has the wow factor.
We tried the Berners Tavern Summer Cup
(£14) – a refreshing concoction with Hendrick’s gin, fruit, a kick of mint and a chamomile and fennel cordial. Dusted with pink flecks across the side of the glass, this was served with real flair. It is available as a sharer so great if you are brunching as a group.
If you happen to be feeling more nice than naughty, there is a fresh smoothie and juice men. The kale, kiwi, coriander, celery and clementine smoothie
(£6) arrived bright green and tall. It was full of goodness and we added hemp protein booster
(£1.50) for extra nutritional points . Bee pollen
or acai berry
also optional if that is not enough healthiness for you!
We tried the classic Eggs Florentine
with toasted English muffin, buttered spinach and a delicious thick and glossy hollandaise sauce. With huge eggs and bright orange yolks this dish was spot on. The eggs used at Berners’ are all heritage breed and free range.
We also opted for the baked eggs, tomato and harissa, yoghurt, spiced nuts and seeds, and toasted Borough Market sourdough bread
(£15). The eggs were baked perfectly and soft in the middle and ideal for dipping. The generous sprinkling of nuts and seeds made for a great crunch too! However my high hopes for this dish were a little let down by an overly tomato-ey tang that felt a little strong for this dish. We also had a side of tasty Scottish smoked salmon (tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon and black pudding also available to add on).
Dessert after brunch is a must right? At Berners’ there are sweet options on the brunch menu. We tried the strawberry éclair
(£9) from the dessert menu. This was filled with fresh cream and sliced strawberries and topped with perfect craquelin and gold leaf. This was certainly a delicious end to a luxe brunch. The chocolate ice cream was rich and not at all sickly sweet – a superbly balanced dessert.
A selection of mini pastries
were also shared over coffee – the cappuccino
were strong and satisfying and served in exquisite china cups.
Berners Tavern is a beautiful space with attention to detail down to the smallest of things. Despite the grandiose interior, the feel was warm and intimate and the service was impeccable.
We would absolutely recommend Berners for brunch in Fitzrovia to mark a special date or if you just feel the need for a little luxury. This spot most definitely fits the bill.
