There operate a walk-in system only and most tables were taken on a Friday lunchtime, which shows it popularity. The café is split into two areas with a mixture of high stools, booths and tables, as well as some seating outside.

The Menu

Brickwood offers a range of hot drinks, iced coffees and soft drinks including cold pressed juices. We had a fresh Carrot, Orange and Ginger juice (£3.1). If you are a coffee lover, the café works closely with Caravan Coffee roasters in King’s Cross making Brickwood’s very own ‘Market Blend’.

Food wise, there are freshly baked pastries and cakes to takeaway or eat in and a larger brunch menu which is served until 3pm. The Native Mushrooms: pan fried mushrooms, spinach & pine nuts with poached egg and torn ricotta on toast was a great vegetarian option (£8.5).

It is not featured on the online menu (presumably it has been updated) but the Ricotta lemon and poppyseed pancakes with raspberry lemon curd and crème fraiche (£9) were a good choice. If I am being fussy, I would have preferred more lemon curd and crème fraiche to soak the pancakes in.

Next time, I am totally trying one of their Sourdough toasties (the BBQ pulled pork sounds amazing). Even better, you can add a salad, soup or hash nuggets during the week for only £2.5.

Overall

Brickwood is a great cafe in Balham offering a varied brunch menu. It is the kind of place you can meet up with friends or sit with a coffee and cake catching up with work or a book!
