2 days in Gdansk
Gdańsk is one of Poland’s most beautiful and historic cities, known for its colourful townhouses and maritime history. It’s a fantastic city break destination that still seems pretty under the radar! This blog post gives you ideas on how to spend 48 hours in Gdansk.
It’s easy to reach from the UK with direct flights from London airports (including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton) taking around 2–2.5 hours, making it ideal for a long weekend escape. The city uses the Polish złoty (PLN), and prices are generally very affordable compared to most Western European cities. We stayed at Montownia Lofts & Experiences in a modern apartment just a 15 minute walk from Gdansk city centre.
Gdansk Free Walking Tour
One of the best ways to get to know Gdańsk is by joining a free walking tour. These tours cover all the main sights while giving you an insight into the city’s complex history. It’s the perfect introduction to the City (albeit a little long) and helps you get your bearings. Just pay what you want at the end!
Royal Way & Long Street (Długa Street)
After the tour, explore the Royal Way, also known as Long Street (Ulica Długa). This iconic street runs from the Golden Gate to the Green Gate, and is lined with beautifully restored merchant houses, cafés, and shops. It’s one of the most photogenic parts of the city.
Neptune’s Fountain & Main Town Hall
In the heart of Long Street you’ll find Neptune’s Fountain, one of Gdańsk’s most famous landmarks and a symbol of the city’s maritime past. Right next to it stands the Main Town Hall, an impressive Gothic-Renaissance building that dominates the square.
St Mary’s Church (Bazylika Mariacka)
St Mary’s Church is one of the largest brick churches in the world. For around £4, you can climb 400 steps to the top of the tower and enjoy 360-degree views over the Old Town and the Baltic coast. There is a countdown of every 10 steps encouraging you to the top! I thought the views from Sassy Rooftop on Motlawa River were better but recommend doing both.
Mariacka Street
Just behind the church is Mariacka Street, considered one of the most beautiful streets in Gdańsk with its narrow cobblestones, decorative staircases, and historic façades. This is also the best place to buy amber jewellery, as Gdańsk is known as the world capital of amber.
Walk Along the Motława River
Have a relaxed walk along the Motława River, where old port cranes sit alongside modern restaurants and bars. As the sun sets, the reflections on the water make this area especially atmospheric.
Four Quarters Fountain & Love Bridge
Visit the Four Quarters Fountain, located near the Royal Chapel and then walk to the nearby Love Bridge, covered in padlocks left by couples from around the world.
St Bridget’s Church
Next, visit St Bridget’s Church, home to the largest amber structure in the world. It’s a magnificent amber altar that reflects Gdańsk’s deep connection to this precious stone.
Sunset River Cruise
In the early evening, take a Motława River sunset cruise, which you can easily book via platforms like GetYourGuide. A sunset cruise offers a gorgeous perspective of the city from the water and is a relaxing way to experience Gdansk.
Optional Day Trip: Sopot Beach
If you want to escape the city, Sopot Beach is only 15 minutes away by train. Known for its long sandy beach and Europe’s longest wooden pier, it’s perfect for a seaside stroll and fresh sea air.
