Thai Restaurant in Putney
Yum Sa is a Thai bar in Restaurant in Putney, located south of the river a hop across the road from East Putney station. It incorporates a gallery and meditation room hosting workshops and art shows. We went to check out the space!
Drinks
We tried the Coconut mocktail crafted especially by the bartender, which was light and refreshing. Also a joy to look at – bright green with a curl of coconut garnish on top and a colourful coconut sprinkle rim. The coconut water and juice here is shipped in monthly from Thailand.
The Yum Sa bar is also a great little spot for a post work drink. With weekday happy hours at £3 for drinks and Thai bar snacks it is an absolute bargain!
Starters
We tried a selection of dim sum (yum sum) and crispy starters. Our favourites were the perfectly crispy spring rolls and juicy breaded prawns. There were also a selection of paani puri containing fillings with a twist – wasabi and papaya salad. It was a first for me but I certainly enjoyed the unusual combination and the wasabi had the necessary kick!
Mains
We tried the yellow curry with vegetables which had a good balance of sweetness and heat served with fluffy, well cooked rice. All curries are customisable to include veg, tofu, prawn or meat.
We also opted for the king prawns padcha with pineapple rice which is cooked (and served) in a half pineapple. It is a hot dish, so one for those that can handle a little heat. The prawns were perfectly juicy and fiery – the heat comes from the ginger in the dish I was told, not chilli. I did fear it was too hot at first but found myself going back and really enjoyed this dish.
Dessert
The kaffir lime crème brulee was my immediate choice and didn’t disappoint. Velvety and silky, it was a zingy, refreshing end to the meal, served with a wonderfully crispy Thai ginger shortbread. The mango rice pudding was a sticky rice, not a rice pudding in the traditional sense and not overly sweet. It was served with mango salsa and coulis on the side, well suited for those who don’t have a huge sweet tooth.
Overall
This Thai restaurant in Putney is a deceptively large space with intricate art pieces adorning the walls. These include specially commissioned pieces from Thailand so worth popping in for.
It is perfect for a meal for a special occasion or just pop in at happy hour to sample the Thai bites, grab a drink and check out the art. With a meditation room and gallery space available for use its ambition as a multi-use space certainly makes for a unique and interesting concept. We were informed classes start soon so we’ll be keeping an eye out.
