The Location

The Amari Watergate Hotel in Bangkok is part of a successful group of high end hotels situated in Thailand, Qatar, Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and China.

We were recommended the 5 star Amari Watergate Hotel by a friend. Situated in Pratunam (aka the shopping district) it is ideally located transport wise near to the Makkasan Airport Link and Ratchathewi BTS Station. Within a 5 minute walk are the Platinum Shopping Mall, Pratunam Market and the Erawan Shrine. Within a 15 minute walk are Central World and Siam Paragon.

We ended up taking taxis from the Amari Watergate to the main attractions. These cost no more than 200 Baht (£4).

The Executive Rooms

This gorgeous hotel in Bangkok has 569 rooms which are perfect for business or leisure travelers. The top four floors are dedicated to the executive rooms and suites.

We booked an executive room and, very fortunately for us, were upgraded to a suite. It was almost as big as my flat in London! It was an amazing room featuring a living room with a desk, two 40 inch LCD Tv’s, an extremely comfortable King Size Bed, two toilets, a walk in shower and double vanity sinks.

The executive rooms have a private reception and lounge where guests can choose to have breakfast. You also have access to complimentary drinks between 5 and 7pm and light snacks. The lounge has fantastic panoramic views of the city with a small outside area with high bar stools and tables.

The light bites were not actually as light as expected. There was a fantastic selection of breads and cheeses, salad, canapes and heartier food including chicken satays, pork balls, and vegetarian stew. If that was not enough, they topped it all off with mini desserts.

Drinks in the 5-7 ‘happy hour’ were extensive and included a range of cocktails with favourites like pina colada and mai tai. There was also a selection of red and white wine, prosecco, beers, gin, rum, whiskey and more.

I would absolutely recommend a stay in the executive rooms in the Amari Watergate. Although obviously more expensive, the rooms are stunning and the access to the executive lounge is definitely worth the extra money.

Dining Rooms

The Amari Watergate has a number of dining restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Staying on the Executive Floor, we could choose between having breakfast at the lounge (serving American style breakfast) or in the Amaya Food Gallery on the fourth floor with the other guests where there was more choice.

We dined at the ground floor restaurant, Cascade, when we arrived, which has a spacious outside area for alfresco dining. We started off with a couple of the signature cocktails 0 the Amari Passion: vodka, peach schnapps, passion fruit puree, passion fruit syrup, orange juice and ginger ale and the Raspberry Emotion: vodka raspberry sugar syrup and sprite. Both of the cocktails were beautifully presented and fruity without being too sweet.

Food wise we had the:

  • Tom Yum Soup served with shrimp
  • Glass Noddles with minced pork
  • Papaya Salad with soft shell crab
  • Massaman Curry

The soup is a traditional thai dish with hot and sour flavours, the special Papaya Salad was fresh and healthy and the Massaman curry, beef, potatoes and onion was my favourite.

On Sunday’s Cascade also offers a baroque night buffet at their outdoor terrace for only 750 baht per person.

The Amari Food Gallery is absolutely stunning. They host a popular Friday seafood night where you can spoil yourself with a wide range of top quality seafood including rock lobsters, blue crabs, mussels, oysters and river prawns. Served from 6.30pm – 11.30pm for 1500 baht, the buffet is good value considering the selection on offer.

We sadly did not have time to visit but the Breeze Spa (on the 8th floor by the pool) looked amazing and offer a number of different massages. The most popular are the mood matching massages which use different oils and techniques.
