Bars in Bangkok

Similarly to the vast amount of restaurants, there is clearly no shortage of bars in Bangkok or just grabbing a beer from a street food stall!

Above Eleven

Situated in the Sukhumvit area, off Soi 11 (hence the name) is the popular Above Eleven Bangkok on the 33rd floor of the Fraser Suites.

Alfresco 64 Bar at the Lebua State Tower

The Lebua at the State Tower is a 5 star hotel overlooking the Chao Phraya River. It is well known for its feature in The Hangover 2 and in Jack Whitehall’s Travels with my father.

Given we were not dining at the Sirocco (top floor) we opted for Alfresco 64, a whiskey cocktail bar based on the 64th floor of the Lebua State Tower.

We sat outside (who doesn’t love drinking al fresco!) and had a couple of cocktails. First up was the Frescito: Alfresco’s take on famous Mojito – Chivas Regal Extra built with ginger, fresh mint, lime, sugar and topped with refreshing ginger ale. Secondly, we had a Silk Road: Fruity and thirst quenching Chivas Regal Extra shaken with cranberry, vanilla, lime and cointreau.

The outside area at Alfresco 64 is not anywhere near as large as Above Eleven or Long Table.  The cocktails are also double the price at around 750 baht. It is worth a visit if you are in the area but I actually wouldn’t go out of my way again given there are better rooftop bars that are much cheaper!

CRU Champagne restaurant and Red Sky Bar

Situated a 5 minute walk from the Amari Watergate Hotel is CRU Champagne and Red Sky Bar on the 15th floor of Centara Grand, Central World. With a lovely alfresco dining area overlooking Bangkok with 360 panoramic views,  it is worth a visit!

We arrived at 4pm when the bar opened as we had just finished some shopping nearby. It was happy hour with 241 cocktails (same drink) at 400 baht and 241 snacks (can be different). We had 2 x Amaretto Sours and were also given some small snacks to nibble on.

Red Sky Bar was really lovely and I would have happily dined at the CRU Champagne restaurant.

KhaoSan Road Bars

A 1km strip of mahyem, you will not be short on bars in Khao San Road, the liveliest area of bars in Bangkok. We started off at Khao San1986 because the music was so good (rnb and hip hop!) and sat outside people watching. Two jagerbombs, a mojito and a frozen blueberry daiquiri came to only 500 baht!

We then moved on to another bar to have our first bucket of the night – just 150 baht for a vodka red bull. Further along the road we stopped off at Golf Bar with its slogan “very strong cocktails!. They were not kidding – only 100 baht, served in a small cup but very strong (we had a pink pussy and an amaretto sour).

Our next stop off (again attracted to the music) was Center Khao San, opposite Lucky Beer where we had two gin based cocktails at 150 baht each.

There are licence restrictions in place whereby the bars have to turn off the music by 1am. This is a shame but there is a club underground which is open later – aptly named “THE CLUB”.

We had such a fun time dancing the night away and meeting friendly people to party with. Oh and don’t forget to have your touristy picture next to the I love KHAO SAN ROAD sign.
