Neighbourhood Restaurant in Soho
Balans Soho Society has five venues in London: Soho, Victoria, Clapham, Kensington and Shepherd’s Bush. We visited the lovely neighbourhood restaurant in Soho for dinner on a busy Wednesday evening. From the outset, we were impressed with the level of service from the friendly staff. Our waitress recommended cocktails and dishes for us to order and was just lovely and smiley! Sadly that is not a given in many restaurants anymore.
Balans Soho Society is all about the great cocktails – I would have been happy with pretty much all of them! The Porn Star Martini (£9.5) was absolutely fantastic – probably the best I have had. I wonder if it was the sugar rim that made the difference (never seen one like that before). We also tried the Gettin’ Figgy With It: Ron Abuelo rum, Tuaca, fig liqueur, lime, ginger beer (£9.5) and the Blackberry Fizz King of Soho gin, blackberry, lime, champagne (£11). Both of these were fantastic and beautifully presented. Loving the cocktails here!
Nibbles / Starters
We kicked off with some Sourdough Bread & Butter (£3) and House-marinated Olives (£4). The bread was so fresh and light and the olives were pretty moreish!
Following this we tried the Seared Scallops: roasted Cornish new potatoes, asparagus, caviar dressing (£9) and Manchego & Serrano Ham Croquettes (£8) with Spanish paprika aioli. We were super impressed with both of these starters! The caviar dressing complimented the scallops well. The croquettes were FANTASTIC – could have eaten those all over again and the paprika aioli was so tasty.
We could not resist the 10 oz Sirloin Steak with double-dipped chips, bourbon bbq sauce (£26). It was a decent sized steak and pretty flavoursome but we thought, compared to the rest of the menu, £26 was a little steep. The Pan-Fried Cod with goats cheese tarragon gnocchi, grilled asparagus, anchovy butter (£17) was outstanding. The cod was so perfectly cooked with crispy skin and we loved the gnocchi. Accompanying our meals we had Ginger & Garlic Sauté Kale (£3) which was great.
