Death and Victory

Bar in Farringdon

Smiths of Smithfields has been through a revamp since Youngs took over in November. The overall design concept has stayed true to the roots of the Grade II-listed building right by Smithfield Market. Spread over three levels, each floor offers something a little different for its guests, ranging from the chilled out vibes on the ground floor to the fine dining with amazing rooftop views on the third floor.

Death and Victory bar is situated on the first floor of Smiths and has created a cocktail list representing the 850 year history of Smithfield Market. Each section is based on different time periods and spirit categories.  It starts off with Chapter One 1150-1304 (Whiskey) and finishes with  Chapter Five 1900s-present (Rum).

The Cocktail Menu

We focused on Chapter Three 1701-1850s (Gin). We kicked off with a Monkey Went To Market with Monkey 47, apricot liqueur, lime juice, gomme, egg white (£12). This is Death and Victory’s spin on the classic nursery rhyme and in recognition of the animals sent to market. It was a floral and light cocktail that went down far too easily!

We moved on to a Bull in a China Shop (£12) named after the rowdy cattle in Smithfields! This cocktail was served in a tea cup with blends of Beefeater 24, Lillet Rouge, Aperol, Campari and green tea. It was a little strong for my pallet and as a non tea drinker.

Heading back to Chapter One we tried the Smooth Fields, an ode to the grassy knoll that Smithfield market was originally built on! This cocktail blends the grassy overtones of Amaro with stout-seasoned Jameson Caskmates with egg white, lemon, sugar syrup. Not being  huge whiskey fans, we were not convinced when ordering. Well we were certainly proven wrong! This lemon and sugar syrup took away the stronger taste and smell of Jameson and we really rated this cocktail. Last, but certainly not least, we had an off menu rum based cocktail with ginger beer, which really hit the spot!
