Roast Restaurant

Afternoon Tea in Borough Market

What was once a floral hall inside Borough Market, is now home to Roast, a beautiful British restaurant with amazing views.  To get there you need to walk to the Roast food stand in the market and go up in the lift. You are greeted with a flood of light from the floor to roof windows giving you superb views of the market and the city.

Afternoon Tea

We visited Roast to try their afternoon tea in Borough Market. As we visited during Wimbledon, the alcohol option was a tall glass of extremely good Pimms. Usually you get a glass of champagne with your tea instead (£30pp). The non alcoholic option is £25pp. If you are there for a super special occasion you can select a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine to accompany your Afternoon Tea (from an extra £13).

There are 13 teas to choose from including some infusions such as the mint tea. The other tea we chose was the Jasmine tea – if you like your floral notes this is a fantastic light tea.

There are five finger sandwiches each. If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, the friendly staff check this when you arrive. The selection included:

  • Coronation chicken
  • Roast beef with watercress, horseradish, and mustard
  • Dried and semi-dried tomato and basil
  • Cucumber, mint and cream cheese
  • Smoked salmon and crème fraiche

The sandwiches were wonderful, each one with lovely fresh ingredients. The roast beef was one of our favourites as we loved the horseradish kick. The tomato and basil was gorgeous and reminded us of the flavours of bruschetta.

Scones and Sweet Treats

The scones were unbelievable. They were HUGE with a lovely crunchy outside and a super fluffy inside. You receive a generous helping of clotted cream and jam preserve.

This was served with two slices of cake – Strawberry and Pimms layer cake and Coffee and Walnut cake. They were so soft and fresh and absolutely delicious. The shot desserts (Sticky Date and Strawberry Eton Mess) tasted amazing and were gone with two spoonfuls, so just enough to tickle your tastebuds. We really enjoyed having two cakes with two much smaller desserts so we were not horribly full!
