Gin Tasting in London
Mrs Foggs Maritime Club & Distillery is one of the latest openings by Mr. Foggs offering great gin tasting in London. It’s right in the heart of the city in Broadgate circle and themed just like the others. This time inspired by Fogg’s Indian wife, Aouda, and the Victorian steamship that they travelled home to London on. We went along to try the new Gin Adventure experience, and it was awesome.
Unsurprisingly, the interior of Mrs Foggs is amazing. We actually felt like we were walking into a ship. The maritime theme ran throughout the bar, with the ground floor featuring lots of woods, posters on the walls, flags hanging from the ceiling, plenty of nautical objects, deck chairs and even a boat making up a booth seat.
The Ragoon Steamer, the first class section for being aboard ship, was home to more plush velvets and old-fashioned patterned carpets. This is where we sat to enjoy our welcome cocktail before heading ‘below deck’ to where all the magic happens.
Our welcome cocktail, The EnGINe Room Gin was a delicious twist on the iconic G&T. Bombay Sapphire gin, chilli-infused St-Germain elderflower liqueur and tonic water it was refreshing, only a touch floral and really light. Great for getting us in the mood for a good gin experience.
The Gin Experience
When it was time to start the Gin Adventure, the grumpy Engine Master, came up to stamp our boarding passes and take us downstairs. From the minute Cary (the Engine Master i.e. the actor hosting our group adventure) entered, his presence filled the bar. He kept the act of grumpy engine master SO well. He made us feel like we had gone back in time, acted a little tipsy/rowdy and made everyone laugh!
Downstairs, it all gets pretty immersive. It’s dark as you enter ‘below deck’ and the sounds of the ship engine and rumbling fill the room as you don your boiler suits or aprons. We all squeezed into a room to learn the history of gin. We discovered how it all started, how it changed and what actually makes a gin.
After the first little section (and lots of laughs), we headed back into the ‘below deck’ bar. We grabbed our first taster and crowded round the Engine Master as he gave more gin-uinely interesting facts (couldn’t resist). We tasted our first small shot of gineva (the first gin) all together, before finishing it up and heading to sit around the bar for more tasting.
The two gins which followed were a little less potent and fiery. The Engine Master taught us how to taste gin properly – with the help of the group on deciding how we usually say hi to a person. Yes, we actually double-cheek kissed the glass – it was hilarious. After swirling and tasting, we all discussed the gins before thinking about what ingredients we really liked to feature in our own gin.
Making Our Own Gin!
From the board of ingredients/flavours, a little direction on those which make a gin sweet/spicy or savoury, and a little help from the engine master on quantities to get the gin to taste how we imagine it, we each got to create our very own unique gin recipe. We then headed back into the room we started in for the Engine Master’s assistant to help us measure our flavoured gin distillates into a measuring beaker for us to decant.
At this point, we got to smell the distillates too – some are very potent and you can tell why only a little needs to go in to make the flavour shine. It’s really interesting to see what the flavours smell like and how the react to form your gin.
We split our gin between a 200ml bottle to take away, a taster glass and a glass for us to make a G&T to test its quality. We were so happy with our creations, different in flavour (one very orange and smoky, the other more like an apple pie flavour), yet both so tasty!
After trying our taster of just gin, we got to enjoy our G&Ts slowly, relaxing and having a few more laughs, before heading off with our bottles bagged and in hand.
The Gin Adventure at Mrs. Foggs is such a fun experience. It feels like a production in the way it’s put together, with the Engine Master and his assistant/apprentice staying very much in character throughout. They are the ones who made the whole experience so fantastic. We felt like we were in a past time, making jokes and having a laugh, and just giving an all-round incredible experience.
We were so happy to take home some of our very own gin – it really is more special! The experience runs every tuesday at 6.01pm, and Saturdays at 1.01pm or 3.31pm. It costs £60 per person (including welcome cocktail, 3 tasters and your own gin). This is reasonable for the whole experience, and being able to take a small bottle of gin home too. We highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in gin tasting in London!
