Restaurants in Koh Phangan
One of the most popular islands in Thailand, there is no shortage of restaurants in Koh Phangan. Whilst they may not offer the best dining experience (at least compared to Bangkok and Chiang Mai) the majority were good. Some of the local food was as cheap as 50 baht for pad thai or thai curry. (£1). Given the amount of tourists on the island, the restaurants in Koh Phangan also offered a wide selection of western food.
Situated down one of the busy side streets that leads to the beach is My Friends Restaurant serving Thai and European food. It had a relaxed informal atmosphere with basic seating on plastic chairs and lots of customer photos on the wall.
We had the Fried Chicken with fresh ginger and vegetables with rice (70 baht) and a Beef Pad Thai (90 baht). Together with a large Singha and a Pink Lady cocktail (gin, triple sec, juice and grenadine) the bill came to the bargain price of 350 baht. They also sell buckets in the restaurant starting from 150 baht if you want to start your night early! The food was pretty great actually and very reasonably priced.
Right next door to our hotel, Sarikantang is Coco Beach Hut offering accommodation and dining. We sat on a table outside with views of the beach which was just gorgeous.
After a week of local food in Bangkok and Chiang Mai we had to have some western food. We chose the Hummus and Warm Pita bread (they have an entire Israeli section) and shared a Meat Lovers Pizza with chicken, chorizo and ham. Both dishes were good – lovely flavour in the hummus and the pizza was thin and crispy just how I like it. Whilst the service was a little slow, it was a lovely beachfront area and worth a visit – expect the bill to be around 500-700 baht for two with a drink each.
Bayshore Restaurant in Koh Phangan
Situated on the north end of Haad Rin sunset beach is the Bayshore Restaurant and Bar with seating and cushions outside on the beach with a more chilled atmosphere and a large restaurant inside with tables overlooking the beach.
We had our first and only pasta meal at Bayshore Restaurant where we had four choices of pasta – spaghetti, fettuccine, penne and rigatoni. We had the Grilled Chicken Alfredo – rich and creamy sauce with parmesan cheese and butter and Aglio e Olio – garlic and extra virgin olive oil with dried chili and sun dried tomatoes. Both dishes were served with two small slices of garlic bread and were decent portions. The pasta was not as al dente as I would have liked but still a great carby dish!
With a frozen strawberry daiquiri (so good!) a beer and a chocolate brownie dessert with ice cream, the bill came to around 850 baht which is onthe more expensive side for Haad Rin.
Our House Restaurant and Bar in Koh Phangan
On the main road running parallel to Haad Rin beach is Our House restaurant and bar. It has benches and sit down seating on the floor. We had a Coconut Green Curry with beef and Fried Sweet and Sour Chicken. With a coconut shake, beer and water, the bill only came to 400 baht. The curry was a huge portion and really filling, full of great flavours without being too spicy.
I had been eyeing this fast food joint up all week in Koh Phangan. My time finally came at 4am after tiring from the Full Moon Party! I had the chicken schnitzel with cheese, bacon and lettuce with some fries which were crinkly light and salty – just perfect for the drunken munches. It knocked me back around 350 baht but it was worth it.
We had lunch twice at Sarikantang sitting by the beach watching the world go by. Starting off with the drinks, I recommend that fruit shakes which are so refreshing. Two kinds of fruit was 105 baht – I chose the strawberry and lime which was great. We also had a Oreo Cookie Shake with broken up bits of Oreo on top which was delicious.
Serving a mixture of local food and western food we had our first sandwich of the holiday at Sarikantang. The Beef Steak sandwich with caramelised onion dressed with vinegar and cheese served with coleslaw and fries was huge. We also had a Subway Sandwich – chicken breast, ham and cheese served with salad and fries.
Another day we also tried the chicken schnitzel and pita with salad and fires – chicken wrapped in warm pita served with cucumber and tomato salad and the House’s stack burger: beef patty with fried egg and cheddar and crispy bacon with caramelised onions served with big crinkly chips and pickled cucumber. The setting was great, the food was good and the staff friendly, albeit it was a little slow at times and it was disappointing when I was served my meal, finished it and then my other half was served the burger!
