Things to do in Mykonos
There are so many great things to do in Mykonos. We were having a fairly relaxed holiday so you can certainly fit more than I did in.
Boat Trip with Chios Yachting
There are so many great things to do in Mykonos! We booked a day trip with Chios Yachting as we wanted to visit another Greek Island whilst we were in the vicinity. We opted for the Mykonos – Delos – Rhenia – semi private cruise which costs EUR 90 per person.
The boat departed at Ag Ioannis Diakoftis port at 9:50am, which was a short 10 minute drive from our hotel in Mykonos Town (our taxi cost EUR 15). We were warmly greeted on board by Giorgos and Pancho. The boat could comfortably fit 30 people with seating areas both at the front and back of the boat. We were provided with complimentary refreshments of beer, wine or soft drink. These were freely available throughout the day!
We arrived at Delos at around 10:45am and were given a choice to visit the archaeological site or remain on the boat for swimming in a nearby gulf. We opted to visit the UNESCO world heritage archaeological site, which cost EUR 12 to enter.
In the ancient times, the myth of god Apollo, god of light, and goddess Artemis were said to have been born on Delos rendering the island sacred. Nowadays, Delos is one of the biggest archaeological sites in Europe, if not the world. Having been first settled in the 3rd millennium BC, it is a fantastic insight into Greek civilisation through ancient history.
We had an hour and a half to walk around the site and that is approximately the amount of time it takes to walk around the shorter of the two suggested routes (the blue route – handily highlighted by blue arrows!). There are longer routes available should you choose to visit with less time restrictions.
We were picked up at 12:30pm and taken on a short trip to Rhenia island. The boat stopped in a beautiful cove where the water was crystal clear! Snorkelling equipment and life jackets were provided and we had two hours available for swimming. For added enjoyment, we were allowed to jump / dive off the side of the boat! The water was lovely, even for October, and a lot warmer than our swimming pool at our hotel!
After swimming, we were served a delicious fresh BBQ which was cooked on board by Giorgos and Pancho. The lamb and beef kebabs were to die for! We were also served chicken, grilled vegetables and plenty of salad – all of which was perfectly cooked and very flavoursome!
Once we were finished up and well fed, the boat headed back to Ag Ioannis Diakoftis port on Mykonos island, where we arrived back around 4:30pm. Giorgos and Pancho were fantastic hosts and it was a thoroughly enjoyable trip. This is definitely one of the best things to in Mykonos and was a wonderful way to spend the day.
Stroll around Mykonos Town and Visit Little Venice
One of the best things to do in Mykonos is to meander through the gorgeous cobbled streets and get a bit lost! While the port is lovely, it was all about the winding streets to me. Just picture the typical white and blue colouring, narrow streets and beautiful minimalist decoration.
Further along from the town is Little Venice which is worth a trip for the windmills. Little Venice is an area near the waterfront with rows of 18th century fishing houses with balconies that look out to the sea. The houses originally belonged to shipping merchants which gave them direct access to the sea There are numerous restaurants and bars by the seafront to watch the sunset.
Go to a beach party!
As you will see from my page on bars in Mykonos, you have to go to a beach party! We loved Tropicana Beach Club as it was reasonably priced and played awesome music. Some of the ‘posher’ beach clubs are Nammos and Kalua but these were closed.
Hire a Car and visit the Island
We chose not to hire a car as some of the roads are fairly narrow and windy. In hindsight out of season, it probably would have been absolutely fine! It is definitely useful having a car as the local buses don’t run that often and taxis can sometimes be scarce (and expensive).
